The Chain and Gate is on the Congleton Road, part way between Macclesfield and Congleton, down a lay-by.

It is not very well signposted, and a bit of a swine to find on a dark evening.

From Macc, I think it is the 3rd lay-by on the right, after Gawsworth. If you get to The Plough at Eaton, you have gone too far, turn around and try the first layby on your left.

When you get down the lay-by, you'll approach the car-park for the pub... lets pop inside...

The pub pretty much consists of two rooms, each with a pool table in, and a bar in the front room.

It very much feels like you're sat in someone's front room, with its of old furniture and a tv with a karaoke machine... very nice though, and homely.

On the bar were Carling, Hartley's Cumbria Way, Guinness and Tins of Carlsberg.

The beer was good, and a good price, the bar girl was friendly.

Sat on the bar is a large figure of a Clown pulling a Rabbit out of his hat!

I think they do food during the day, but I cannot be certain as I didn't see any menus out.

The Gents Toilets can be found from the front room...

...enter the door and you'll find yourself in a dark corridor to your left. It has no lights, but do a u-turn to your right, and you'll be ok...

There is a distinct smell of stale p*ss in here, often referred to as "chicken bugger". The old stone urinal is quite long, 5 white panes against a tiled wall.

Above is a cistern that was a bit wet and mouldy, it had a "Love United - Hate Glazer" sticker on it.

The room is dimly lit, and the cubicle had no light at all. In fact, I'm not even sure if it was in use, as the door was propped open by and old Dart Board Case, and too bar stools.

The flash on the camera revealed it housed a white bog with white seat, brush and bog roll... perhaps it is in use if they have loo roll.

Back out to the sink, opposite the urinal. It is a simple sink, with hand soap, and an extra tap on the wall (see photo). There was no mirror, and no hand dryer. On the floor was a little bin thingee, presumably to bung wet tissues in.

Overall, a nice pub, but with pretty poor toilets.
