The Treacle Tap is a new additon to the Macclesfield Drinking Scene.

It is essentially a very small pub / cafe on Sunderland Street, selling Pies from Pieminister (with Mash, Minted Peas and "Groovy" Gravy), along with beers from local breweries.

We have paid a few visits here since the bar opened. The pies, although often sold out and limited in choice, have gone down well. We have found beers from the local Storm Brewing Company of Macclesfield, the Bollington Brewing Company and the Tatton Brewing Co. There is also a Czech Lager on offer, brewed in Buxton!

The drinks menu is by far more extensive than the food menu.

The atmosphere in here is cosy, and a very welcome change to many other places in Macc. We found the service to be good, and friendly.

Now, the toilets... these are at the back of the establishment...

... being very small, there is only one Gents cubicle, and one Ladies cubicle. A sink is shared between the two.

In the Gents Cubicle is fairly spacious, with white and grey walls. A clean white bog sits on the far wall, with top button flush, and two roll holders, plenty of loo roll for the pie and beer loving punters!

It's nice to see a good locking door too!

The sink was a little over active, with soap, dryer or paper towels - nice!

Recommended - we will definately be back soon!

Update January 2011:

We can't seem to stay away from The Treacle Tap, the place rocks!

On tap the other night was "Feckless" one of the first beers from the new Redwillow Brewery - proper nice it was too, at £2.50 a pint we'll be sure to sample many a tipple in here.

We have also managed to get a photo of the toilets sink area. The sink itseld is small in depth, but quite wide, with two angled taps. As mentioned previously the taps are a little enthusiastic, do not be alarmed. There is a nice oval mirror, hand soap, and paper towels or hand dryer.

We recommend you visit this establishment!

“Er... nice review but the pies are from Pieminister, not treacletown. Please could you amend the review? Many thanks!”

“Hi Bronwyn. Thanks for clearing that up for us, we have amended the review. We kind of presumed they were Treacle Town Pies, given the similarity in the name. We are enjoying the Treacle Tap, and will be back soon.”

“The hot tap got fixed today, hurrah! It is still enthusiastic but now turns itself off when you have finished!”

“I welcomed the concept of a small bar selling local produce and have always strived to support you, but, to sell a pint at 10:55pm and then demand that the customer leaves at 11:00pm for no other reason than you want to go home early is both plain stupid and bad manners. OK, I know that "with the end of standard permitted hours, drinking up time became irrelevant with the 2003 Act", but maybe you should alter the hours displayed on your door to clarify this. I was completely let down by this amateur attitude – would you prefer that customers just posted their money through the letterbox so that it saves you the convenience of having to supply a service?”

“We are really sorry that you feel let down, the fact is that you shouldn't have been served at 22.55. Our staff go round all the tables at 22.40ish to explain that we close at 23h (or 23.40 before midnight closing Thurs, Fri, Sat) and that if you want another drink, to get it now in order to have time to drink it. Unfortunately you might have hit us on a busy night when staff were under pressure to keep serving people who were queueing, rather than disappoint. As you rightly point out, we are no longer under the old licensing regime with its drinking up times, the opening hours on our door are exactly that - the hours we are permitted to be open. So the staff asking you firmly to leave at 23h wasn't anything to do with them wanting to leave early, it was about not breaking the law. We want to keep our licence and need customers to help us by leaving when we ask them. Again, I can only apologise that you were sold a drink too close to closing time. Hope you will come back and give us another chance.”

“Well, call me nosey but I have been told to google Treacle Tap by a fellow Manager of a pub, they sold your place as a shining example of fresh independent. I have to say, that if this is the tone you address a customer who has a greivance I suggest you will not be in business long. Well trained staff would have explained your policy when noting the time of purchase...very dissappointing. We will not be coming to try your Pies weather Pieminister or otherwise. Indeed, “Er... nice review but the pies are from Pieminister, not treacletown. Please could you amend the review?", really!!?? is this a proffesional approach. Someone needs to change their attitude or get more sleep, I get grumpy when tired also.”
