The Princess Louise is a classic example of a Victorian gin palace.
Built in 1872, the pub had a refit in 1892 in which no expense was spared. Etched mirrors line the walls, surrounded by polychromatic tiling, elaborate terracotta friezes, patterned ceilings, marble pillars with gilt capitals, tiled floors mosaics and stained and painted glass.
It is a tied house, being owned by the Samuel Smith Brewery of Tadcaster, Yorkshire. The building is protected by its Grade II listing and has what has been described as "a rich example of a Victorian public house interior",by William B Simpson and Sons; who contracted out the work.
The Princess Louise is also notable for having been the venue for a number of influential folk clubs run by Ewan MacColl and others, which played an important part in the British folk revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s!
We visited this place twice on a busy bank holiday weekend. The pub was packed, but we managed to get in and we spent the evening supping pints of real ale and some organic strawberry ale which was pretty yummy!
The toilets are just as spectacular as the rest of the pub decor.
The gents' toilets, boasting marble urinals, also date back to the 19th century. They are of sufficient historical and architectural interest that they have their own formal 'listing' and are therefore protected from modification or destruction.
Wow, grade listed urinal, brilliant or what? We certainly think so. See photo of the heritage listed urinal!
We had a good couple of nights here. The most amazing thing about this pub is its history and original historic features.
The grade listed bog certainly made this pub a winner of the day for us.
Come here to the The Princess Louise and relieve yourself in Victorian splendour!
