I've never seen anything like the Old Cinema Launderette before. This place is unique. It is a launderette/bar- a great combination!
I decided to visit it having found that a band I liked were on tour in the UK, and happened to be playing here. The first thing you notice when you walk through the door is a comfy sofa and a bar (which serves beer and wine during the evening - possibly not during the day, though, I'm not sure), but beyond that are washing machines and dryers. It normally closes as a launderette long before the evening's entertainment starts, but when I went there there the band were walking around the launderette with cups of tea, waiting for their washing to finish. The decor in the place is straight out of the 50s, clean and crisp, with great attention to detail even down to the lavatory, which is strangely beautiful in its own right.
As a music venue, it works strangely well. Audience-wise, 30 people would probably really be pushing it. The 'stage' is the area immediately in front of the washers, with the audience sitting or standing around it. There's no sound system - you really don't need it in a place that size. You can hear everything perfectly, and the acoustics are far better than you've got any right to expect in a launderette. I've been to venues described as 'intimate' before, but never anything like this!
As you could probably guess, the toilet is quite quirky too.
The toilet is a single toilet and quite small in size.
But what lacks for size makes up with the décor. There are various old pics that line the wall and bric-a-brac. The wallpaper is a burgundy colour and is made to look like 50s period stuff. Like the rest of the venue we have an interesting toilet.
In all, it's definitely one of the quirkier venues I've ever been to, but also far and away one of the best. The Metro Radio Arena it ain't - and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
It's probably quite a good launderette, too.

“Thank you for your lovely review, I am very pleased you liked the venue and that you appreciated our toilet in particular, it was a labour of love and is a bit of a local attraction in its own right! We allow anyone who is passing and asks politely to use it and as you can imagine we get all sorts from school children to drunks, the postman is our favourite visitor he pops in on his rounds.
We hope you return soon for a gig or to do your laundry as we are indeed the best laundetette you could possibly find and we do serve alcoholic drinks during the day, what could be better?

“Hi Kathy. We most certainly enjoyed our visit and the loo experience. We most certainly will return again when visiting the North East. We may well get our underpants washed and have an ale at the same time! All the best. The PubToilets.com Team. ”
